On Saturday July 26, young adults, missionaries, and friends in the Yerevan Armenia District organized a family history activity. They met at the FamilySearch Center located at the district center and invited Marietta Karapetyan, a skilled geneologist, to help them create a family tree, find records, and attach memories to their ancestors. This activity was also gentle nod to Salt Lake City, Utah’s celebration of Pioneer Day held on July 24th. Pioneer Day honors early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who trekked across the plains of the US to find a place where they could worship freely. Remembering those how came before is a powerful and important work of the Church, whether it is in a large stake of Utah or the small district of Armenia.
Family history is more than an interesting hobby in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; it’s a sacred work. The Prophet Elijah prophesied that God would “turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:6), and President Russell M. Nelson shared in a 2018 youth broadcast that “The gathering of Israel is the most important work taking place on the earth today… That gathering includes family history work.”
